This A5 spiro-bound dictionary groups words for learning by the sound they start with. Each sound of English has a variety of words where the focus sound occurs at the start of the word. The most common spelling patterns (phonics knowledge) for each sound are illustrated in a box at the top of the page.
The word lists for each sound are common words used in writing, and academic vocabulary – words that are used across subject areas. The 300 most common high-frequency words for writing are listed in the back of the dictionary, along with information about the most common root words, prefixes and suffixes. The back of the dictionary also contains information about how to syllabify words and a summary of the most useful spelling rules and conventions. There are also mini versions of the two Spelling Under Scrutiny wall posters, and copies of the editing guides used in Spelling Under Scrutiny for teaching proofreading skills.
This is an ideal resource for upper primatry and lower secondary students and can be used to teach literacy skills across the curriculum.
